Trg Republike

Cakovec is the most northern town in Croatia and the capital of Medjimurje region.
According to the historical data, the first settlement in the area of today's Cakovec was built by the Romans. It was called AQUAMA and it was a fortified settlement intended for military purposes.
The town was named after Count Dimitrije Csaky who built a wooden fortress in the early 13th century. The fortress was, in turn, named "Csaky's Tower".

Dvorac Zrinskih

The most important historical period of the town was in the 16th and 17th centuries during which the Croatian Vice-Roys and warlords of the Zrinskis family had their seat in Cakovec.

Perivoj Zrinski

There is a splendid and huge Park in the central position of the town named after the Zrinskis.

I love Cakovec having been there many tiimes. The restaurant in your photo is called Riblji, which as the name suggests serves mainly fish. The ambience and service inside is a bit dour but the food isn't too bad. I prefer Rustica or Katrina.

When I will visit inland Croatia, I will sure go to Cakovec. That looks a very nice town and the fact that it is not too touristy is an added bonus !

I believe that Cakovec should be more promoted, since I see it is so interesting and has big history what not many people know. Thank you for sharing Boris.
