Panoramic view of Tvrdja, the old part of the town Osijek, situated on the right bank of the river Drava, is the administrative and economic centre of Eastern Croatia. The history of the town goes back in Roman times when the emperor Hadrian raised the old settlement of Mursa to a colony with a special privileges in AD 331 (Mursa maior). When the first Croats settled in the area, they gave it its present-day name. |
