Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge), also called Ponte degli Alpini, is the most important monument of Bassano del Grappa, dear to popular tradition.
If coming from Vicenza (and nearby Marostica) you have to drive through viale Diaz, enter in via Macello which will bring you to via Angarano, just a few meters away from the bridge.

Well-known for the war song dedicated to it, Ponte Vecchio is built entirely in wood. The original construction dates back to as far as 1209, but several more followed as the bridge was devastated over and over by floods and wars.

The bridge has always been rebuilt in wood again except for once in 1524, when it was rebuilt in stone, but with rather poor results as it lasted only for two years.
Not much of a kind left in Italy today and this one is undoubtely the most beautiful, becoming the emblem of the town.

In 1569 the bridge was reconstructed by Andrea Palladio (greatist architect of Renaissance) and has since always been rebuilt according to the project of this famous architect. In case you didn't know it, Palladio is considered as the most inovative architect of all times.

Both entrances to the bridge are embellished by the 1531 marble arcades, while at the farther end one finds the Museo del Ponte degli Alpini (the Museum of the Bridge), where relics and photographic documentationnarrate the history of the bridge.

The bridge was destroyed during last world war, it was reconstructed by ANA (National Association of Alpine Infantry), and from that day is known as Ponte degli Alpini (Bridge of the Alpine Soldiers).
It is the town's symbol nowadays.
