General Tips: Piazza Liberta

Favorite Thing: Piazza Liberta (Liberty Square) is the heart of Bassano del Grappa, here stands the magnificent Church of San Giovanni Battista, the statue of St. Bassiano, and very pitoresque Bottega del Pane, the oldest baker shop in the town, which is situated right on the corner of Piazzotto Montevecchio and the main square.

General Tips: Palazzo del Comune

Favorite Thing: The Palazzo del Comune, one of the most attractive building in Piazza Liberta, was built in 1582 but the graceful loggia decorating it belongs to the 15th century. On the facade, overlooking Piazza Liberta, one can admire the great Orologio (Clock) constructed by B. Ferracina in 1747 and decorated with the signs of the Zodiac, and the important 16th century fresco representing St. Christofer.

General Tips: Torre Civica

Favorite Thing: At the end of via Vittorelli stands Torre Civica (The City Tower), built during the 13th and 14th century under Paduan domain. The tower was recently completely restored. It is about 42m high and dominates Piazza Garibaldi and the entire historic centre of the town. The bettlement and the ogive-arched windows were a late addition made by architect Gaidon in 1825.

General Tips: Chiesa di San Francesco

Favorite Thing: The Church of St. Francis, which stands on Piazza Garibaldi, was built at the end of the 13th century in Romanesque-Gothic style. Two centuries later, it was given over to the French who dedicated it to St. Francis. In the interior of the church there are 15th century frescoes, the Baroque altar by B. Tabacco and a Holy Cross by Guariento. The vestibule dating from 1306 protect the doorway and the recently restored fresco Madonna con Bambino (Madonna with Child).

Favorite Thing: The church of San Giovanni Battista with its outstanding facade dominates Piazza Liberta. Originally the church was built in the fourteenth century, restored and enlarged around mid-18th century, when the neo-Classical facade was added.
Attached to the church the chapel of SS.Sacramento is in Rococo style (1697) by G.B. Piazzetta.

General Tips: Tempio Ossario

Favorite Thing: Tempio Ossario is situated on the outskirts of the historic centre, on so-called Piazzale Cadorna. It is projected at the beginning of the nineteenth century as the new cathedral, but after the Great War became a war memorial devoted to Ossuary for the fallen on the Grappa battlefields. Now it shelters the remains of over 5400 fallen.
