Ponte Vecchio or Ponte degli Alpini This relativly small town, situated in the northern part of Italy, has a very rich hirtory started in palaeolitic period. Roman colonization brought civilization and later Christian religion. The name of the town derives from the Roman family Bassius, owner of the large "latifundium" (large landed property). The town survived invasion by the Cimbri, a barbarian population of German origin, the Lombard invasion, the Ezzelini rule, the Venetian Republic rule, the Austrian rule and finally was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy during Risorgimento. During the first world war the town changed its name from Bassano Veneto into Bassano del Grappa - the massif of Mount Grappa was the main stronghold of the Italian defensive front between the rivers Brenta and Piave. |
