Tradition says that the origin of the lace made on the island of Burano goes back to a legend. A sailor, returning from one of his voyages to distant lands, brought to his beloved a piece of beautiful seaweed that he had found on the sea bed. The girl, fascinated by the stupendous beauty of the gift, wanted to reproduce with a needle and thread the extraordinary embroidery that nature has created. It is how the stich called "punto aria" was born, a characteristic stich which can be seen in all laces made at Burano.
Lace School and Museum is situated in the Gothic building in Piazza Galuppi, don't miss to visit it.

The craft of lace-making developed in the early 16th century and encouraged by the noble Venetian ladies. The carft was the mainstay of the island's economy throughout the 19th century. In 1872, lace again saved the inhabitants, reduced to the poverty line by a very cold winter.
There was even a time when there was a risk of closing the lace school at Burano, but the doge's wife, Morosina Morosini, promoted the craft and gave a great boost to the lace school on the island.

Lace of Burano

In the 16th century, other stiches were devised and special patterns and designs; the shapes were perfected, ranging from geometric patterns to flowers, animals, scrolls and embroidery. So called "controtaglio" style was created, surounded by large scrolls and cords, and the "roselline", little star-shaped rosettes scattered in various order over the lacy background.
Until a short time ago, it was not uncommon to find old lace-makers sitting outside their houses, making lace in the street. I saw it long ago in occasion of my first visit to Burano.

Local Customs: Fishermen's village

In its past, Burano was predominately fishermen's village. Great many of its mankind occupied by fishery in order to support the families. Nowadays this old tradition has almost disappeared and only a few fishermen exists in Murano, working it as occupation. Too bad, because the whole place could be more pitoresque with fishermen tools and nets around.

The most fascinating in Burano are the combinations of colours used to paint the facades, something you cannot see elswhere. Once again it proofs that human imagination has no limits. One have to be amazed seeing all this colours put together and how it incredible matches.
