Festivals Celebrations & Protests: New Year atmosphere everywhere

  • To some visitors, Rome looks as it is New Year there every day in a year, and its not wrong opinion. During the high summer season it really looks alike, probably thats why most of its inhabitants, if possible, run away from it.
The New Year atmosphere in the city is great and can be noticed all around the town, especially during the night. Meeting New Year, however, might be a nightmare if you don't book your restaurant in advance. Number of places is limited, that is what you have to know before getting here. Make sure your agent adviced you about.

Signs, Signals & Superstitions: Do the statues talk, yes if in Rome

  • There are four of five so-called talking statues in Rome, but I've find this one only. Locals use them for various motiffs today, someone to attached his thesis, the others to present their poems or novels, while some to complain about problems they faced living in the city of Rome. I was in particularly attracted by this graphities, which are aimed against Vatican and some priests who have been discovered as a pedofils. There was big scandals recently in Italy about that issue.

Local Customs: Do the statues walk, yes but not in Rome only

  • Some of this guys, who act living statues, did extraordinary job before appearing in front of the audiance. Their mask is just perfect in each and every detail. Most of them stand still for hours, which is not an easy way to earn some extra money. I was in particularly fascinated by the skill of the statue, dunno if boy or girl, who act swordsman. He/she was moving and changing positions, from time to time, doing it in a very gracious way.

Local Customs: Are the "statues" pickpockets, some in Rome are

  • We usually stand in front of the statues admiring their beauty and skill of the sculptors who made them. Rome is rich of magnificent statues which can be found all over the town, in particularly on many of its numerous squares. Some locals, however, who are acting "statues" from the past ancient times of Rome, use them in order to sack naive tourists, attracted by chance to make immemorable snapshot for family album.
The good advise is; put your money or purse in a safe place before getting together with such a group of, allow me to say, professional plunderers.

Local Customs: Mille e una fontana

  • Would like to see mayor's happy face when signing the bill for the water supply in Rome, must be huge if so many fountains all over the city. Virtualy every square, even the smallest one, have its own fountain and each one is different in size, year of built and its beauty. You can't miss them when strolling around, you can't not to admire them but what I suggest you is to stop counting them.

  • At least now I know what Venice is missing to be even more attractive to the visitors, ten or twenty fountains on some of those empty squares. But, being more clever than Roman are, Venetians will never built them. Instead of paying huge bill for the water, Venetians prefer collecting money from the restaurants or cafe-bars holders renting squares for those mostly very ugly chairas and tables. Who cares if some streets or squares barely passable.

  • Some like them some don't but nobody is indifferent to the fountains of Rome. Some like them during day light, I prefer to watch them in a night time. The city fountains are beautifully illuminated what makes them even more attractive. Don't miss evening walks when in Rome and in particularly watching the fountains.

Fabulous pictures. Great tips, I'll be back to read more. It really is a shame that the city is not so clean.

Il mio ristorante preferito a Roma è il Tosca (vedi tip sulla mia paginetta di Roma...) Li servono piatti abbondanti a prezzi buoni. Inoltre l'ambiente è simpatico. Ciao!
