  • The first impression one gets when approaching to it is, gosh this construction is so huge. With all technique and skills we have today it takes several years to build the football stadium andfinish it, what a brillant effort was to build the Colosseum two thousands years ago.
The Colosseum was comissioned by the Emperor Vespasian, who died in year 79., and finished during era of his son Tit. As most of the other constructions in Rome, the Colosseum was never finished according to its plans. Truth is, fourth level is missing.
It was built for about 50.000 spectators but sometimes there were around 80.000 of them. In order to protect the spectators from a heat, kind of sailing canvas (called "vella") was added to its top. More than thousand sailors needed to operate with that huge vella.
The Colosseum was architectural wonder in many aspects. Over twenty entries leaded to its interiors, on three different lavels, and less than half an hour needed to empty it. It takes more than that in most of football stadiums built nowadays.

  • Yes, it looks huge when looking at it from the outside but its real proportions one can be aware of only after getting inside. There were seats for about 60.000 spectators on three different levels. Each class had separate entry and separate seats. First level was dedicated exclusevely to judges, senators and aristochracy. The second one was for the middle class while third on the top for those who were poor.
There were the underground levels too, called "hipageum", where gladiators, servants and animals stayed during the games. Hipagenum itself had different levels with huge network of paths, staircases and elevators. The ground floor, where gladiators fought, was called "harena", it's Latin name for the sand. The coloquial name for the amphitheatres soon became arena.......

  • Colossum by night looks just stunning. It is extremelly well illuminated and one who did it is a master of his job. The light is graduated from almost poor to very bright and this combination was perfectly executed. This play of shadow and light in rotation makes Colosseum very attractive in a dark night, as it was during my stay in Rome.

  • According to Roman standards, San Pietro in Vincoli is reletively small church. It has almost insignificant facade but its interiors is rich of magnificent works of art. Those who are not fammiliar with probably wont even stop by.
The church was built by Eudoxia, daughter of Theodosius the Younger and wife of the Emperor Valentinian III. The basilica was called Eudoxiana or more commonly San Pietro in Vincoli (St. Peter in Chains). The portico was constructed in the 15th century for Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere, the future Pope Julius II, who ordered Michelangelo to build him a funeral monument.

  • The Vittorio Emanuele II Monument, coloquially called "Vittoriano", was designed by Giuseppe Sacconi and it dominates the whole area of Capitol Hill. This huge monument commemorate Italian unification and have special significations in the hearts of its citizens.
The central part of the monument is occupied by the equestrian statue of the king, work of Venetian sculptor Chiaradia and completed by Gallori after the death os the artists. The bas-reliefs on the base represents the most famous Italian cities, while in the center is the Altar of the Fatherland, crowned by the statue of Rome. In 1921 the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was added to the monument.
Il Vittoriano is one of the emblems of the Rome and belongs to the most visited sights of the town.

  • Back to Roman times The Senate was settled on the top of the Capitoline Hill (Italians call it Campidoglio). In the ancient times it was a nerve-centre for the city life, nowadays it is the seat of the commune.
Campidoglio is definetelly one of the most beautiful sights in whole of Rome, thanks to the magnificient steps designed by Michelangelo. It is trapezoidal shaped square, unique in the world with the bronze statue of Marco Aurelio right in the center of the system. The peculiar paving for the square was chosen by Michelangelo, referable to an oval built geometry so typical for the Renaissance.

Fabulous pictures. Great tips, I'll be back to read more. It really is a shame that the city is not so clean.
