Getting TO/AROUND: Parking car in Venice might be a huge problem, so many visitors arriving here in cars and very limited space. One can wait more then one hour for free parking place in Park S. Andrea, as I did, and finaly it costs me 16,52 euros for 7 hours. The alternative is the Garage San Marco which charge you 24 euros per day.
The best solution is to park your car in Mestre, for free if possible, and get to Venice by the public transportation.

Getting TO/AROUND: Vaporetto is a small boat which, for a price of 5 euros, convey tourists from the mainland, through Canal Grande, to the post nearby Ponte Rialto. The conveyance take about half an hour and you can come in or come out on each of the several stations on the route.
It is also the cheapest way to take some pictures from the water front.

Getting TO/AROUND: In case you are in hurry or you just don't want to be pushed and disturbed by the crowd, small taxi-boat can be a good option. I've took it from Ponte Rialto and it cost me 20 euros. When I've asked the guy speaking in Italian, how much it cost, he said to me "wait a moment, the price depend on number of passengers". Since a group of people came after, he asked me 20 euros for a ride, which was acceptable.

Getting TO/AROUND: It is almost unbeliveable, there exist cheap gondola ride in Venice. The fact is, it takes only a few minutes across the canale, but it is definetely cheap, costs half of euro only. It is called Traghetto S.M. del Giglio and takes you nearby Santa Maria della Salute and Peggy Gugenhaim Museum.

Getting TO/AROUND: The boat tour to the Venetian islands starts from Riva degli Schiavoni. In case you want to visit Burano only, as I did, it takes more then one hour. First stop is at Lido and from there you go to Sabbioni. At Sabbioni you have to change the boat which takes you to Tre Porti and from there finaly to Burano. As far as I am concerned, this route is very long and too complicated. Retour is, however, more simple.
The tour-retour ticket costs 6 euros.

Getting TO/AROUND: Transportation of the goods, inside the historic centre of the town, is pretty much complicated in Venice. The only possible way to do supplies is by the water front, and most of the canals are narrow with many short bridges across of its.
This is wine transporting boat in Rio della Sensa, just in front of Tintotetto's house.

    Transportation: Local bus
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: Sleeping outside Venice cost much less then in the city area, especially if you book hotel in Mestre or nearby places. On the other hand, prices for public transportation to and from Venice, plus vaporetto, might not compense the difference you spared. This is what you have to calculate.
However, if you travel to Venice with your own car it is to be considered as a good option. Parking in area of Piazzale Roma, where the two huge garages are situated, might be your Venice nightmare. In the high season or during the holidays, you might wait couple of hours for a free place in garage. Besides, no metter of parking time, you have to pay 25 euros which is fee for 24 hours.

Getting TO/AROUND: This cruising ship of enourmuos roportions is almost bigger then Piazza San Marco! It is even higher the bell tower of San Giorgio, as you can see on the picture. I wasn't expected to see such a "monster" boat entering in the harbour of Venice. When it happened, it was the main attraction of the moment, everybody came on Piazzetta to make a photo of it.

Transportation: Santa Lucia - the train station
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: Getting to Venice by train is probably the most practic way of traveling that exist. Santa Lucia train station is situated on the bank of Canal Grande, just a foot from Ponte degli Scalzi. Immediately after arriving you'll be able to feel and touch the taste of Venice.
Bad thing is if you're loaded with the luggage because walking through the crowded city might be a nightmare.

Tried to find this lovely restuarant on the recommendation of a family friend last year and it was closed down (no tables/chairs, very dusty, newspaper over windows) :-(
