Tourist Trap: New look of the Venice - Ponte Calatrava

  • Since September 11. 2008. the look of Venice has changed forever. After 70 years the new bridge was built across the Grand Canal at the spot where no bridge ever raised before. It is glass and steel construction, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, and it span the canal between Santa Lucia Train Station and the main car park at Piazzale Roma.
Those who love Venice, as it use to be, cannot accept this new fact, others who are more practical welcomed it with a kind of relief.

At Least Do This: Fact is, from now on travelers won't have to go out of their way to cross the Grand Canal via the Ponte degli Scalzi or pay to ride the vaporetto.
Alternative: In case you "hate" this new bridge, take the direction of the Ponte degli Scalzi to cross the Grand Canal or do it by paying vaporetto ride.

    Gondolas: Exploring Venice in Gondola
  • Tip Rating:
  • My idea was to take some pictures of the town from the water front and nothing is more appropriate for that purpose then the gondola ride. Since I was alone, the gondoliere ask me 130 euros for an 45 minutes ride! Can you imagine that, it costs more then the average air ticket from any of European cities to Venice!
Ask for the price before taking the gondola ride because you might be unpleasently surprised at the end of the tour.

Alternative: Take a walk around as I did.

    Gondolas: Gondolas off the duty

  • Must be, I estimate, at least several thounsands of gondolas in Venice which are in good conditions and ready to take the passengers all over the city canals. Every time I am visiting Venice, no metter if high season or not, most of the gondolas stay in the little harbours or docks, completely off the duty.
This must be, I suppose, a kind of agreement towards gondolieri in order to maintaine the high price for a ride.

At Least Do This: Ignore the gondolieri, make them suffering and seaking for the customers and the prices must go down.

Tourist Trap: Who's idea is this?

  • I just couldn't belive when I saw this scafold over Torre dell' Orologgio, it looks like a bad bad joke!

Visiting Venice in June 10 2006 and finaly found that ugly scafold off.

At Least Do This: I wonder who's idea it was?, must be some very funny guy. Last September there was picture of Torre over the scafold, who have changed it and why?
Alternative: This picture represent the stupidity of those who have approved such an culturocid, you could expect anything else in Venice but not this.
Is there any responsability for such an act, are there any consequences for those who have done it?

Tourist Trap: Tourist menu - decoy for naive ones
  • Tip Rating:
  • Venice - This is how I see cameriere of Venice

  • There are more then dozen restaurants around Ponte Rialto and all of them offering "CALAMARI NOSTRANI" (squid from Adriatic sea). It is not the truth!Since I was born and grown up in the place on the Adriatic, I know perfectly well the squid from that area.
Ask cameriere to make it grilled and he will respond it is not possible. That is the best proof the squid is from elswhere not from the Adriatic.
Never trust to "tourist menu" which costs 10-15 euros, it is a mousetrap. The food you'll get for that money is more then bad.

Alternative: Chek for "trattoria" or "osteria", small and traditional local restaurants, the best choice when in Venice or its surroundings.

    Gondolas: Canvassing for gondola ride

  • Canvassing tourists is hii job

  • Guys like this one, dressed in the traditional Venetian clothes, can be seen all over the place, especially in the most crowded areas of Venice.

At Least Do This: Their job is catching tourists around and canvassing them for a gondola drive. In case they convinced you for a ride, you'll pay extra comission (not knowing that) to gondoliere.
According to the agreement between the city authorities and gondolieres, the fee for a ride should cost you 60-65 euros, however, most of the gondolieres ask you 80-100 euros. Keep it in mind in case you negotiate the price.

Tried to find this lovely restuarant on the recommendation of a family friend last year and it was closed down (no tables/chairs, very dusty, newspaper over windows) :-(
