Isola Burano: Burano

  • Burano is my favourite part of the Venice complex, in fact it is the only part of the town which I really love. I still remember my first visit to Burano, which was over 25 years ago, when the place was less touristic and less crowded of course. You could walk around, meet the locals everywhere and talk to them openly. Now you cannot see old fishermen around, seat and chat with them and sipping home-made wine which was usually offered by them.

  • Canals, narrow houses painted in pastel colours or decidedly contrasting with the single shades of the lagoon, interweave with fishing boats, that is what Burano makes so attractive.
First thing you notice in Burano is a harmony of colours that are splendidly featured in these peaceful townscapes.

  • Before the famous battle of Lepanto, in 1571, the immense uninhabited space of Arsenale was the largest ship industry in the world. Nowadays it is military area, forbidde for the public visitors.
What you see on the picture is the imposing 15th century gate-entrance to the Arsenale.

    Arsenale: Arsenale
  • Tip Rating:
  • Arsenale is an immense uninhabited space which, in the 16th century, use to be the site of the largest ship industry in the world. There are two large docks (darsena), both built by Jocopo Sansovino who also designed the church of San Francesco della Vigna.
Today we can only admire to the monumental entrance of the Arsenale because the entrance into it isn't allowed for the public visitors.

  • Dante Alighieri, probably the greatest Italian poet, was very impressed by Arsenale, that the poet recalled it in Canto XXI of the "Inferno"
"..... chi fa suo legno novo e chi ristoppa /
le coste a quel che piu viaggi fece; /
    chi ribatte da proda,
    e chi da poppa;......"
The bust of great poet is located on the left side of the main entrance into the Arsenale.

  • Scuola di San Giovanni, situated in Campiello San Giovanni (in San Polo) is architectural complex composed of an elegant Renaissance courtyard (work by Pietro Lombardo), and another courtxard leading to the Gothic church dedicated to the Saint John and the School. A number of great works of art can be seen in the school, while on the wall in the hall there is a cycle of paintings illustrating stories of Saint John the Evangelist.

  • Besides the church of San Giovanni, in this courtyard you can see a collection of objects d'art and fragments of sculptures from demolished buildings.
In the School, however, there are works by Tintoretto, Giandomenico Tiepolo, Palma the Younger and Titian. Also, Hall of the Cross with the reliquary containing the sacred fragment gifted to the School in 1369.

Off The Beaten Path: Vecchia Pescheria
  • Tip Rating:
  • The attractive building of Vecchia Pescheria, the Old Fish Market, is facing Canal Grande and beautiful Ca' d'Oro which stands right on the opposite side of the chanel. Here you can buy fresh fish, the best Mediterranean kind that money can buy, or, you can learn what to order when in the restaurants.

Tried to find this lovely restuarant on the recommendation of a family friend last year and it was closed down (no tables/chairs, very dusty, newspaper over windows) :-(
