Favorite Thing: This picture shows the magnificient bridge of Ponte Pietra, the only one that remains from the Roman times of the town. Ponte Pietra dates from the Pre-Augustan period, and has five beautiful arches. At the end of the bridge stands the tall watch tower by Alberto della Scala. Right in behind you can see Il Duomo, the Cathedral of Verona and its imposing campanile.

Favorite Thing: The band of the river Adige with the Duomo on the left-hand and the church of San Giorgio in Braida on the right-hand.
Fondest Memory: On the right corner of the picture, you can see the bell tower of the church Santo Stefano, a masterpiece of Veronese Romanesque architecture. It was intended to be the city's first Cathedral. By taking the road, next to Santo Stefano, you can reach two very important spots, San Pietro Hill with the castle and the Sanctuary of Madonna di Lourdes.

Favorite Thing: The entrance to Piazza Bra goes through an archway known as the Portoni della Bra, consisting of two huge arches surmounted by battlements which formed part of the walls built by Gian Galeazzo Visconti at the end of the 14th century. This gateway is flanked on one side by the Torre Pentagona, which was also built at the end of the 14th century.

Favorite Thing: The entrance to the museum is near Portoni della Bra and Filarmonico. The museum is founded by te Veronese scholar Scipione Maffei in 1714, and it is the oldest museum in Europe devoted to a collection of ancient inscriptions. There is an outstanding exibition of stone slabs bearing inscriptions, statues, funeral urns, and bas-reliefs, most of them Etruscan, Greek or Roman.

Favorite Thing: The Palazzo della Gran Guardia, the first building on the left of the Portoni, although similar in style to the work of Sanmicheli was, in fact, built in 1610 by Domenico Curtoni. The Palace remained incomplete until 1820, and is notable for its massive bulk, as well as the forceful design of the facade, the doorway, and the windows.

Favorite Thing: Teatro Filarmonico is the chief theatre in Verona, and was one of the most important, as well as one of the most beautiful theatres in 18th century Italy. Built in 1716 to the design of the well known architect and stage designer Francesco Bibiena, it was destoyed by fire in 1760 and had to be completely rebuilt. The building was again destroyed in 1945, this time by bombing. Thanks to the Academia Filarmonica Veronese, the owners of the theatre, it has now been completely restored by the architect V. Filippini, who has faithfully reproduced the beautiful 18th century proscenium arch.

Favorite Thing: The Roman Amphitheatre, better known as the Arena, is the most important of the monuments for which Verona is famed, and of which the city is so proud. Originally, the Amphitheatre stood outside the Roman walls of the city. In the 3rd century A.D., however, the Emperor Gallenius extended the latter to include the Arena, which is thought to have been built in the beginning of the 1st century. In size and importance it is second only to the Colosseum in Rome. Most of the architecture in Verona built during the Renaissance was inspired by the Arena, the city's crowning glory
Fondest Memory: If possible, visit it in July or August during the Opera festival.
