Favorite Thing: Il Grande Castello, the symbol of Villafranca, was realized in the course of two centuries. The construction has began in 1185, at the same time when the town was founded. After the battle at Ponte dei Molini, nearby Mantova in 1199, the mayor of Verona, Sallinguera de' Garamenti, ordered construction of big castle (grande castello).

Favorite Thing: Grande Castello occupies central part of the townlet of Villafranca. Its massive and very high walls are very well preserved, however, the internal part of the castle has almost completely wanished during the centuries. Today it serve as a biggest open parking place in the town.

Favorite Thing: The castle complex, finished in 1202, consisted of huge and high walls in a shape of an cube. In 1243, Enrico da Egna the mayor of Verona, has comissioned the main tower of the castle, which still stands and dominates the whole central part of the town.

Favorite Thing: In 1345, during Mastino II and Cangrande della Scala, the Castle became a part of huge defending system called "Serraglio", a wing of fortresses starting at Nogarole Rocca to Valeggio sul Mincio. It was the golden period of migthy Scala Family, who ruled in Verona and its wide surroundings over the centuries.

Favorite Thing: The entrance in the castle goes through an passageway, above which stands the crucifix, painted by Jacopo Tumicelli. Inside the castle there is a small chapel called Cristo Re or del Santo Crocefisso, content an valuable frescoe from 13th century and three paintings by Gianbattista Lanceni (1659-1745).
