UK Embassy in Berlin
The United Kingdom Embassy is located in Wilhelstrasse 70-71 since the end of the 19th century. The original building, known as Palais Strousberg, was built in 1868 by a German railway magnate. In 1884 the UK bought the site after Strousberg's bankruptcy.
The building stood empty when diplomatic relations were broken off in World War I, and was reoccupied again in 1920. The building was heavilly damaged in WW II and was demolished in 1950.
Upon reunification in 1991, the UK Government decided to reoccupy the site in Wilhelmstrasse. The new building was constructed and opened by Queen Elisabeth I in 2000.
Teater des Westens
Teater des Westens was founded in 1895 fro plays but soon next year was dedicated to opera and operetta. It is located in Charlottenburg District, Kantstrasse 12, in the vicinity of Berliner Zoo. Great Enrico Caruso made his debut here in 1905.
Teater des Westens is the most famous and certainly the most prominent theatres for musicals and operettas in Germany.
Heiliggeist-Gasse
This nice looking gallery is situated right opposite the Berliner Dom, across the bridge and on the other bank of the River Spree, and yet could me easilly missed when strolling around. I almost have miss it myself too but bad weather conditions have help me to find it. In fact, I went on the other side of the cathedral to take some pics from that perspective and it started snowing. There was that roof covered gallery so I decided to search for a shelter under it.
It happened to be pretty interesting place with some self standing sculptures on top of a tall wooden pillars. The sculptures are of a normal human size and painted in vivid colours, looking alike Naive art. The corridor of a gallery is full of window-shops and tables in its central part from two or three cafe-bars and restaurants. In the back side of the gallery is an open air exibition of Berliner funny bears.
Denkmal fur Adolf Diesterweg
Friedrich Adolf Wilhel Diesterweg (1790-1866) was educator and thinker who campaigned for the secularisation of the schools. He was reformer in both education and teaching, basing his program on what was named "basic princeples of the struggle for life" and therefore in a permanent conflicts with the leading educational stream under the controll of the church. Diesterweg's general idea was to remove political and religious influence from the German educational system. He believed that all people, no matter of their class, should have equal rights to be educated.
Volkswagen Automobil Forum
For car-crazy population this building which is situated at the corner of Unter den Linden and Friedrichstrasse is more then a cathedral. It is called Volkswagen Automobil Forum and is representing the Volkswagen Company with all its products. VW Gruppe consists of many divisions, including SEAT (Spanish), Skoda (Czech), Bently (British), Bugatti (French). There is also truck division.
The facility was opened in 1999, occupying 10,000 square meters spread over three stories and having over 7.000 car lover visitors per day. Its far more then simply cars, the central atrium hosted permanent exibits of antiques vechicles, while different small shops offering accessories. Just in case, if can't afford to buy a Bugatti Veyron, which cost a fortune, maybe you can spend 149 euros to buy silver Bugatti cufflinks.
The forum is open monday to friday, from 09:00 to 20:00, weekends and public holidays from 10:00 to 18:00.
Russian Embasy
Russian Embasy in Berlin, located in Unter der Linden Bulevard, demonstrate all features of what was known as Stalinist architecture. Behind such an monumental structure could be only a very strong political motives. Creating this building, in the heart of the capital of the former enemy, was equal as sending a very clear message by telling, I am the boss here. At the same time, Stalin set an unmistakable signal to the GDR leaders, what is the model for the reconstruction of the town in a prominent locations.
Oberbaumbrucke
I took this pictures from the taxi, on my way to the airport, the last day in Berlin. It was bad weather in Berlin, during my 4 days visiting, and I was rather disappointed with the snow in March and very low temperature. Instead of strolling around, as I usually do, was forced to reduce my explorings to the town centre only. But I will revisit Berlin, that's for sure.
Oberbaumbrucke is a double-deck bridge crossing the River Spree considering one of the city landmarks. It links Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, former boroughs that were divided by the Berlin Wall. The bridge itself therefore become an important symbol of Berlin's unbity. The lower deck of the bridge carries roadway, while the upper deck carries Berlin U-Bahn.
The bridge was built in 1732 in order to connect the municipal area with its rural environs. The name Oberbaumbrucke stemmed from from the heavy tree trunk, from which the first original bridge was built. The stone bridge, which appearing today, was opened in 1896. It was designed by Otto Stahn who was inspired by a North German brick Gothic.
