Welcome to The 8th Best Page of Athens (mashAllah) here on VT.

I hope I've provided enough useful info so that you can easily plan your trip to Athens.

The capital of Greece took its name from the goddess Athena, the goddess of wisdom and knowledge. This is where democracy was born. This is where that marvel of architecture, The Acropolis, was created. This is where Socrates, Aristotle & Plato were born and lightened the world with their ideology and philosphy. This is where a 20 years old boy became The King Alexander The Great ! In short, Athens is the symbol of freedom, art n culture, history and democracy.

In Athens, wherever you stand, wherever you turn, the city's long and rich history will be alive in front of you. If you would travel in underground Metro, you will see that there are real historical ruins which have been discovered while building underground metro stations ! These ruins are preserved like the way they were found buried under the groud. History is alive everywhere and sometimes you feel like if the time has stopped !

I arrived in Athens with my friend from Switzerland on 20th November 2002. According to our plan, we stayed one day in Athens on the way to and one day on the way back from the greek Islands (of Mykonos & Santorini) on 24th November 2002.

The first Impression of Greece was quite impressive as we landed on Athens International Airport, everything was so clean & tidy, which we never imagined! After coming out of airport we took a bus to reach the metro station. The bus was okay as well, like all the other European city's buses. Then we went to the Metro station to reach the city center where most of the hotels are situated. Metro stations were much more clean and artistically decorated then the Airport !!! By this time, we were superised and very impressed by the quality of infrastructure. We were keenly looking forward to have some impression of the city so that we can compare if only a few things are clean or the general cleanliness & infrastructure of Athens is the same.

Anyways, we came out of the Metro station in the heart of the Athens, known as ‘Plaka Square’, exactly in front of the Greek National Parliment building!

It was late at night and but the streets were still busy. We were happy to see a lot of shops open and night life activities going on.

After searching a lot of hotels we finally decided for ‘Hotel Acropolis House’. It was a hotel built in a 3 storey, old turkish house near entrance to Acropolis, which was a plus point. It costed us 35 Euros for 2 double bed for a night.

The Picture above shows me standing infront of the Greek National Parliment . The metro station of Plaka Square is just underneath.

Now you may continue browsing the Travel tips for more about what to see, where to stay, what to do & where to eat in Athens, The Capital of GREECE !
