Lots of people come to Oxford - hop off a bus from London, have a rather miserable tour of the city with an idiot guide, plod around numerous colleges (though there are some great ones - like St. John's, my old college, in the picture), get sworn at by locals who push you off the pavement, and then leave again. But there is more to our great city. Yes - the university is there, and the colleges are well worth loking at. Oxford is also a centre of industry, with a major car plant (BMW, now - it used to be Rover), and an ethnically diverse population, especially in the city's east. There are also pockets of poverty, especially in the estates on the outskirts. |
