Berlin - the Old and New Capital

by TinyTuck - last update: Oct 10, 2002

Berlin means history! From 1961 till 1989 the Berlin Wall devided the city in East and West. In 1991 Berlin became again Capital of reunified Germany.
Berlin means modernity and progress. Still - 13 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall - they are busy in rebuilding and modernizing the Eastern part. I think East Berlin is safe to be considered much more modern nowadays than the West side!
And Berlin means fun and craziness! You are right in the heart of matters, the pulsating heart of Germany. Berlin is definately THE place to be (when you are young and free and want to let it all out...)!

This summer I visited Germany's Capital for the first time in my life, can you believe it? Having visited most Western European capital cities but my own... A shame, isn't it? :-)
For this reason (and others) I decided (quite spontaneously) to do a short internship at the Charité (Berlin's famous university hospital). So, I ended up staying in Berlin for 2 1/2 weeks at a friend's house living near the Alexanderplatz, in the very center of the city. I spent the days working and the evenings and weekends going out for some beers and/or visiting all the different sights of Berlin. Let me tell you that there is a LOT to see and do! 2 1/2 weeks was just enough to see the most famous sights and places.
I really loved Berlin!
It's big, exciting, crazy and fun!
I will definately try to get a job in Berlin once I'm done with my studies (if I decide to stay in Germany...) to live there for a couple of years!

Some Facts:

- 3.5 Million people, 470,000 of which are non-Germans
- 67.8% houses, 17.5% forest, 6.4% water (river, lakes)
- More bridges than Venice
- More channels than Amsterdam
- The world's 3rd highest TV tower
- Biggest shopping center of (continental) Europe
- And what I find especially interesting: Berlin is the only European city with more museums than rainy days per year!! (...wonder who calculated that out!)

Very interesting about the Stasi Museum. Just saw the German film "The Lives of Others" about the Stasi--great film. Luv the Bear sculptures! Nice page!

Great museum - a very chilling reminder of the recent past. Not easy to find - take the U Bahn to Magdenenstrasse and as you come out of the west end (nearest Alexanderplatz) there is a VERY small sign 'Stasimuseum' - keep walking maybe 300m.
