I´m from a smaller neighbor city of Düsseldorf and spent 19 years of my life in this area! Düsseldorf has got about 600,000 inhabitants and is the capital of the state of North-Rhine Westphalia. (Cologne, which lies about 60 km southwards at the Rhine in the same state, is actually bigger and much more important than Düsseldorf, which gave rise to rivalism between those two cities, that can still be felt when trying to order a Kölsch in Düsseldorf or an Alt in Cologne...)
Düsseldorf is actually a pretty cool place, even if it isn´t exactly considered one of Germany´s highlights.
Principly, Düsseldorf is a Business city with it´s modern business centers, many hotels, a big international airport, and some of the world´s biggest trade fairs. By the way, Düsseldorf ist the city with the highest population of Japanese outside of Japan!
Moreover, Düsseldorf is famous for its Fashion - The "Kö" (Königsallee) is a deadly expensive shopping street with elegant cafés for the "high society" and everybody who wants to be part of it...
It´s also famous for its Altstadt (old town), which is known as "the world's longest bar". It´s down at the Rhine River, and offers a few sights, individual clothing stores, tons of different restaurants and snack bars from all over the world, and many many bars where people usually have "Altbier" (a dark kind of beer that´s only brewed here). On Saturday night it´s extremely crowded and a lot of fun!

We´re on a tour to the beautiful Ahr (= a river)
We´re just having Burgundy, that´s for sure
For the latest at midnight we begin to long for a glas of Altbeer on tap
And the whole club begins to sing:

- Pros:Altbier, a lot of party, paradise for shopping, and great atmosphere at the Rhine River
- Cons:As a whole it's not really a beautiful city with its many quickly built postwar houses...
- In a nutshell:City of Punks, trendy snobs and business people ;-)

Very nice photo and description! May I recommend a very nice and economic hotel near the Hofgarten? Hotel Stern Sternstraße 53 40479 Düsseldorf I was born right around the corner and spent the first 36 years of my life in Düsseldorf!

Dusseldorf looks like a cool city to me. I didn't get what you meant by the "longest bar"? The Carnival looks like it would be fun. We get Warsteiner Beer here in Goose Bay and I find it hits you hard!!!!! :-)

We arrived in Germany last summer via the Dusseldorf airport. (something different, we'd always used Frankfurt and Munich) It was an interesting town. Great page.
