Living in Peru

by shapnack - last update: Mar 10, 2008

El Gringo en Peru !

This is me in Amsterdam. Great trip!!!!
Hola. Im an American from New York City living in Piura, Peru. I searched the world (mostly on the web) to find a perfect place to live. I have lived throughout Asia and have traveled extensively in the US and have visited Europe. I narrowed my search to Peru. Many of my friends asked "Why Peru?". I also know most people would never be as comfortable as I am here, and I like it this way. I donīt want anyone else coming here. I came here to escape the world I knew. I chose Peru for deeply personal reasons, but mostly because I felt the political situation was stable here, the climate is great, and I can afford to live here comfortably.

The Search

After I decided to live in Peru, I needed to find a location within Peru! Of course, the logical choice was Lima. I studied the city and saw I would be leaving one large, polluted metropolis for another, and decided Lima was NOT an option. I then stumbled upon an idea that was to change my life.
I set up a profile in a social networking website (you know the one). I searched for and added many Peruvian women as friends. from these friends I began to learn to speak a little Spanish and I also learned a great deal about the country.
The more I learned about Peru, the more it became obvious to me that I wanted to live in the north, close to the coast. The climate up here is more to my liking.
I then narrowed my search for friends to the northern cities.

Doris

My search for a place to live was also coupled with a search for a soulmate. Somehow, I met Doris in the social networking website. The more we talked, the more we saw we shared the same dreams. It was almost scarey! Sometimes I thought it was too good to be true! I did have a few "requirements" for my perfect partner (no kids, not married, Northern Peru coast, etc), and here was Doris.
