Fulda

by IceBear7 - last update: Nov 15, 2004

People know Fulda because at least once in your life you stop at the train station on your way from north to south or east to west - but not many get off the train. Or you pass the city while driving on the autobahn, from south to north or west to east. But who would stop in a place that looks like the middle of nowhere?

In fact this region is the middle of the new one Germany, after many years just kilometers away from the border, in the western part. We always had a high prescence of American soldiers in town, and we were celebrating big time when the border opened and you could go to towns and villages in the east again that for many years were out of reach. We were among the first Germans celebrating, and today it's just normal to be able to go in every direction without being interrupted by fences, watch towers, soldiers and guns. People in Fulda like to celebrate, and with every party there is a little bit of celebrating freedom :-)
The history of Fulda is a really interesting one, and you see it with every meter you walk in the city or drive around the country. Great care is taken of preserving the old buildings and memories. Nature, mountains, activities are just around the corner in the Rhön mountains.

A great region to for holidays, and for many people to live in - but not if you like big cities, if you like choice of activities and entertainment. Then you just have to get away - and come back for a weekend evry now and then, to enjoy the atmosphere, the nature, the low prices and meeting old friends. But personally I always enjoying coming back to Fulda and the surroundings - but I'm always happy as well to leave the place again on Sunday afternoon, driving the 3 1/2 hours (or more) towards the big cities and getting HOME to Düsseldorf.

Interesting stuff. I've been looking for places to visit in Hessen now that I'm here, and this looks like a good option :).

Yes, I go through Fulda on the train quite often. But I have also actually been there a few times on business or to look around. Is that where you grew up? Greetings from Frankfurt an der Nidda, I mean am Main.
