Bike the Bridge

Crossing the bridge does not necessarily include seeing the bridge... I felt kind of betrayed during the bike trip - because there was no bridge! But still, it was a great day!!

Blazing Saddles is one of the companies renting bikes in SF, on various locations throughout the city. One is directly at Fisherman's Wharf. Bikes are great, you get a helmet, a lock, a little bag and a map. They show you exactly which way to go to cross The Bridge and explain various routes of different length. You even get a ferry ticket which you can return if you decide to cycle back over the bridge. They also take a picture of you before departure which you can buy upon return (nice pictures, but at 10 USD too expensive). You don't get any emergency kit for flat tyres etc, but they have a phone helpline. Which doesn't help much if you're cycling in the middle of nowhere.

Equipment: Our tour was crossing the bridge in complete fog, then going down to sunny Sausalito, having lunch there and then cycle on to sunny Tiburon (whole trip about 25 km). There my tyre gave up but fortunately just a few meters away from the ferry. The ferry was very busy, full of cyclists, but a comfortable to get some rest. The maps are not perfect... it helps to watch out for people with the same bike/ same bag/ same map - it's a good sign you're on the right way.
