3 Weeks in Mexico

by IceBear7 - last update: Oct 22, 2004

In December 2003 I went on my first longer solo backpacking trip: 3 weeks in Mexico!
This was one of the best things I ever did in my life, I enjoyed every single bit of it and I can't wait to hit the road again :-)
Have not found the time yet to scan my pictures, hope I'll get it done over the next weeks.

My Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Cancún
Day 2: Checking out Cancún , the beaches, setting up rough itinerary for the next weeks
Day 3: Visit of Tulum ruins
Day 4: Visit of Chichén Itzá ruins, arrival in Mérida
Day 5: Enjoying lazy day in Mérida
Day 6: Ruins all day – Ruta Puuc, Uxmal , Night-Bus to Villahermosa
Day 7: Visit of Parque Venta in Villahermosa , then bus to San Andrés Tuxtla
Day 8: lazy day in San Andrés , trip to Catemaco
Day 9: Bus to Veracruz , exploring the city
Day 10: spending time in Veracruz and Boca del Río
Day 11: Bus to Oaxaca , exploring the city
Day 12: Trip to Monte Albán ruins and Tree of Tule
Day 13: lazy day in Oaxaca , Night-Bus to San Cristóbal
Day 14: Arrival in San Cristóbal de las Casas , Tour of indigenous villages
Day 15: CHRISTMAS EVE: spending time in San Cristóbal and celebrating Christmas
Day 16: CHRISTMAS DAY: Cañon del Sumidero
Day 17: morning in San Cristóbal , then nightmare-bus-trip to Palenque – spending night on the toilet
Day 18: visit of Palenque ruins in the rain, spending afternoon in boring rainy Palenque town, drinking herbal tea and waiting for bus, night-bus to Campeche
Day 19: relaxing, sunbathing, sentimental last full day of trip in Campeche , night bus to Cancún via Mérida
Day 20: arrival early in Cancún , spending day at the beach, spending rest of money, flight home
Day 21: arrival in rainy, cold, stressy Germany

PS

In October 2004, I came to Mexico again, just for a couple of hours. During my trip to California I visited the city of Tijuana, which is located right behind the border and just a 40 min tram ride from San Diego.

It was great being back in this wonderful country but it's not the "real" Mexico for me... Not useful if you want to get to know Mexico, but if you're in San Diego go there! It's Mexico after all :-)

A great trip which really gave you a good taste for Mexico. A little Spanish can truly go a long way!
