State of Victoria Off The Beaten Path

Off The Beaten Path: Mt.Buller.. Ski Lodge...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Mt Buller Resort is 250km north east of Melbourne. ( aprox. 3 hour drive.)
Rising to an altitude of 1 805 metres above sea level, Mt. Buller Resort is well known for being one of Victoria's most popular ski resorts.
The longest ski trail is 2.5km with an average snow depth of 1.5m.
There are 25 ski lifts, capable of moving 40,000 people every hour. And since the maximum number of people skiing is approximately 10 000 at peak periods, there are no delays in catching a ski lift.

The season opens in early June, and closes in early October.

There are 7000 beds available at the Resort in hotels, lodges and clubs.
A further 2300 guest beds are available in nearby towns such as Mansfield, less than a 45 minute drive away.
This is where we stayed at the time of our last visit, but I would have preferred to stay at the resort.

  • Another very popular Ski Resort is Mt. Buffalo.

Proclaimed a National Park back in 1898, Mt Buffalo is one of Australia's oldest and most beautiful National Parks.
In the late 1800's visitors would travel on horseback up to the plateau. Today, the drive onto the plateau takes just over 30 minutes from the picturesque valley townships of Porepunkah and Bright.

The awesome beauty of the park has changed very little over the years and your first visit to the amazing Mt Buffalo Gorge is sure to take your breath away. Situated just 100 metres from the beautiful gardens of the historic Mt Buffalo Chalet, you can often look out over a sea of clouds across to Mt Bogong and Mt Kosciusko in the distance. You'll soon understand why we're affectionately known as "Your Island in the Sky".

  • European involvement at Mount Hotham commenced with the movement of stock between Gippsland and NE Victoria which followed settlement near Omeo by McKillop, McFarlane, Livingstone and others in 1835. Stockmen from Cobungra station moved cattle to the Ovens & Kiewa valleys over the top of Hotham. Grazing interest was followed by mining when gold was discovered in almost all the river valleys surrounding Hotham. It was soon after that the intrinsic beauty of the area brought interest in recreational use of the area.

Off The Beaten Path: Mt. Donna Buang
  • Tip Rating:
  • Throughout winter, Mt Donna Buang offers a winter playground of snow-play and tobogganing.
At a height of 1,245 metres, Mt Donna Buang often has moderate to heavy snow falls throughout the winter months and is easily accessible.
The Rainforest Gallery includes a 40 metre long observation platform which takes you into the rainforest canopy (one of only three of its type in Australia). Mt Donna Buang also includes numerous memorable walks, including a 350 metre long elevated walkway taking you through the rainforest where you will see majestic 65 metre tall trees (many of which are 300-400 years old).

Mt Donna Buang is a very easy and scenic 18km drive from Arrabri Lodge all times of the year.
