We once stayed at The Gordon Inn, found it to be very comfortable, and easy on the pocket.--- Also the Ascot Budget Inn. This is going back a few years, so my info may not be up to date.
Hostels are also a great option, and there are many, some within walking distance of the Brisbane Transit center, in Roma St.
Prices are good....And very convenient...
One place I would not recommend, is the 'Formula 1' , Although it is very close to the Airport, there were no coffee/tea making facilities in your room... (not good) and my double room was so tiny, I almost couldn't fit my luggage in... Price.. $49AUD
The Gordon was $45aust. when we stayed there. Not sure about current prices. The Ascot, is from $61 aud.
Unique Qualities: The Hostels I believe, have a pool, haven't stayed there myself.
