Parliment House
Canberra

Canberra is Australia's capital city and the only major town or city inside the Australian Capital Territory... and was proclaimed once the ACT was formed in 1912, making it Australia's youngest city.
The design for the city came about by having an International Competition which was won by an American architect, Walter Burley Griffin. In the 1950's, Federal Government injected huge amounts of money into Canberra, to make it a recognised capital city with the construction of many of Canberra's national buildings. The damming of Molonglo River was also part of this project, which then became Lake Burley Griffin. Reluctantly, the Government departments that were in Melbourne and Sydney at the time, were shifted to Canberra.
The new Parliament House was built in 1988, and this completed Burley Griffin's city plan.

Walter Burley Griffin worked as an architect in three continents.. America, Australia, and India... but is mainly remembered for his design for Australia's National Capital. Canberra has grown to more than four times the population of the city he had planned.
Griffin also designed the NSW towns of Leeton and Griffith.

Griffin was born on 24 November 1876 at Maywood, Chicago... later going on to study architecture at the University of Illinios and graduated in 1899. In 1912, Walter Griffin won the international competition with his design for the new Australian city of Canberra. His continual travels to oversee the development, eventually led to his decision to settle in Australia, although some years later he again moved, this time to India.

Walter Burley Griffin died in India on 11 February 1937 after an operation for peritonitis. Marion Mahony Griffin (his wife) returned to NSW.. but only remained in Australia for about a year, before returning to Chicago where she died in 1961 at the age of 91.

" Unfortunately, I did not have many photos of my trip to Canberra, so I have obtained permission to use some images from a Web site".
