On the Erskine River, surrounded on three sides by forest ranges, and to the south by the spectacular Southern Ocean, it was the first place declared an area of 'special significance and natural beauty' by the Victorian Government.

On a bay named after Captain Louttit, who sought shelter there around 1840 while retrieving cargo from a ship-wreck, it was first settled by William Lindsay, a timber-cutter who began felling the area. Subdivision began in 1869 and the town was named after the Marquis of Lorne. Much of its colourful history is preserved in the gracious homes which remain.

It sure is a beautiful area. Surfed along that stretch of the west coast (of Vic) too many years ago & promised myself ever since I would go back. You've convinced me, it's time to plan for that.

Thxs for refreshing my memory on Lorne - we had gastronomic meals while we were there. But it is difficult to get around to the Erskine falls without a private transport - nevertheless I did enjoy Lorne
