Sydney

Sydney has one of the world's greatest harbours, and it is crossed by one of the world's most famous bridges. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of the longest single-arch bridges in the world. Beyond it on the right bank is the distinctive Sydney Opera House, which is also one of the most famous buildings in the world.

The settlement of Sydney is said to have begun on the 26th. January 1788, when the 11 ships of the "First Fleet" dropped anchor at Sydney Cove, one of the loveliest harbours in the world. But the human cargo that arrived in those ships was not lovely. The aim was not to build a great city, but to establish a prison settlement for British convicts. Soldiers and prisoners worked to carve out a rough and ready settlement, using European knowledge and ignoring the skills of the local people who had lived in this place for so long, and who were now being decimated by new European diseases. On several occasions the little settlement came close to starvation.

I have just returned from a wonderful week in Sydney, and had a great time there. This city has so much to offer, so much to see and do, and really does make for an exciting holiday.

There are also very strict laws regarding the level of alcohol you can have in your system. Random breath testing occurs all the time from any police car. Be safe, just dont drink at all.
