March 2010 at Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau

Mike and I started our journey in the Mediterranean here in Barcelona. The city is tucked strategically close to the French border and has a wide Mediterranean coastline.

Ciutat Vella
The oldest and most central district in Barcelona, the neighborhoods of Cituat Vella are the most popular destination for new arrivals and tourists. Its name means "Old City" (in Catalan) and it consists of four smaller neighborhoods. The main boulevard, Las Ramblas, runs down the center of the Cituat Vella district, from Place de Catalunya to the Old Port (Port Vell). On the East side of Las Ramblas is the Barri Gotic and to the West, El Raval.

Over the years, the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau has become the most significant public building in Catalan modernisme. The architectural complex of Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau is an unmistakable landmark in the culture and heritage of Barcelona city in particular and in Catalonia in general.

Park Guell by Antoni Gaudi

Park Guell was commissioned by Eusebi Güell who wanted to create a stylish park for Barcelona aristocracy.

The park contains amazing stone structures (see below), stunning tiling and fascinating buildings. This picture is the Gaudi dragon fountain that is at the entrance to Guell park. This dragon is adorned in beautiful coloured tiling.

La Catedral

Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulalia - is Catalan for Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia.

Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulalia - is Catalan for Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia.

The interior consists of one wide nave with 28 side chapels. The crypt contains the sarcophagus of Santa Eulalia. The cathedral also has a beautifully carved choir.
