Was discovered by Vasco da Gama, the portuguese explorer on Christmas day.
He named the surrounding area "Natal" after Christ' birthday.

 Nice page Bert, but actually Durban is named after Sir Benjamin D'Urban, who was (I believe) an english governor of the province of Natal. Maybe you heard the Zulu name "Elangani" (a big hotel), which I think means "place in the sun". David
