I spent a few days in Dublin during my trip to Ireland in the summer of 2001. Fun town! There's so much to do and so much to see. The city feels both new and old at the same time. New, because most faces you'll see on the streets are of people born after the moon landing. Old, because you will see buildings and sites that were created long before America was discovered by the Europeans. Yet somehow it all manages to fuse together merrily and still feel Irish. Just be sure to avoid the TV, one of my biggest disappointments about Ireland was seeing Jerry Springer on the tube on my very first day. Luckily, I was able to promptly put that horror behind me with the help of a few pints. :-) |
While you're in Dublin, be sure to visit the Christchurch Cathedral and its crypt - the oldest structure in Dublin. Religious opinions aside, it truly is a beautiful and majestic place - inside, underneath, and out. St.Stephen's Green is a wonderful park to relax in, Grafton St. is a great place to shop if that's your kick, and the National Museum of Ireland is full of fascinating history about the land and its people going back tens of thousands of years. And of course, no trip to Dublin would be complete without the mandatory visits to the Guiness brewery - where the liquid gold of Ireland is made - and the Jameson distillery. |
