Ah, yes! Melbourne. The city that was rated as the best place in the world to move to. It was my 2nd destination in Australia, one that I had to survive a 12 hour overnight bus ride from Sydney to get to. When I first arrived in Melbourne, and for the next couple of days, all I could think of was, "So what's all the fuss about?" There just didn't seem to be anything special about it. It wasn't until a few more days later, more exactly until I was leaving it, that I started to realize that this place grows on you like few others that I've experienced in the past. Melbourne is just.... COMFORTABLE! There aren't too many striking landmarks like in Sydney, although it too has its share. It doesn't have a picturesque waterfront. It doesn't have a lot of things that make other cities memorable. But what it does have is that intangible something that just makes you comfortable with the city. It could be the much more friendly and laid back nature of Melbournites compared to some of the other busier places. It could be the endless alleys filled to the brim with cafes and restaurants. The quaint trams that criss-cross the city. The beautiful parks and gardens which are numerous as well as lush. Somehow it all just meshes together really well. Add in some great destinations that are within driving distance of the city, and before you know it, it all starts to make sense. |

Melbourne has quite a bit to offer the sightseers! There're lots of beautiful examples of architecture throughout the city, the stunning Botanical Gardens - probably some of the best I've ever seen, Rialto Towers, endless big and small malls and shopping galleries, River Yarra, and lots more. |
And there's lots to do outside the city as well. From making a daytrip to surfing capital of the world - Torquay - and its great beaches, to taking a day or two-long trip down the Great Ocean Road. You can visit the 12 Apostles, or even continue beyond to other wonderful sights... |

Cassie | australia2 Thu Jun 30, 2005 13:05 UTC I want to send your Melb page address to our local travel people. It's that "intangible something" you put it so well. Dare I say it is the friendliness in its layback way, as you felt. I always feel it when I come "Home". Terrific material... thank you. | springbreak105 Wed Feb 23, 2005 04:04 UTC The photos you took while on Great Ocean Road are amazing! Kind of reminds me of the Pacific Coast Highway. |
