The other side of Amsterdam comes alive at night. The lights from the bars, restaurants and shops twinkle and reflect off of the water. There are lots of people bar hopping, sitting in cafes (smoking pot, of course). Everywhere you turn, there are crowds of people. The lines to get into restaurants or to get french fries are looooooong. I couldn't visit Amsterdam without touring the Red Light District. It was not what I expected. Instead of finding one long boulevard bathed in a scarlet glow, lined with beautiful women tempting men with sex, I found that there are several areas. However, the women were not beautiful (not usually). The women were most often wearing lingerie while sitting on a barstool behind a plate glass picture window. Occasionally, she would be young and sexy, but the norm was a woman in her late 20s to early 30s and a little chubby. These women all shared the same look of boredom. I think that I would have to be a man to understand the attraction of having sex behind a curtain with a woman who was indifferent. Don't be surprised if you come up on someone urinating in the street (hence the overwhelming odor in the streets). Amsterdam is a crazy town. People get loaded with booze and pot. You'll have a great time no matter what. The people watching aspect alone makes the trip worthwhile.
