The quickest way of travelling to Costa Rica is by airplane.

In San Jose public transportation is very good. Taxis are the recommended method of getting around, especially at night. The meters are known as 'marias' and display the tariff, very cheap.

To travel to nearby cities buses are appropriate. There are various bus depots/terminals throughout San Jose depending on where one is travelling.

If you're travelling to the tourist resorts (Arenal, Manuel Antonio,etc...) then there are various private transport companies one can use. The lobbies of most hotels provide information on these.

The picture on this page is of a mother and her daughter in their roadside store between La Fortuna and San Jose.
