Oosterbeek, located 5 KM west of Arnhem, is a pleasant suburb with sad past. It was here that the disasterous "Operation Market Garden," British General Montgomery's plan to end WWII by Christmas of 1944, took place. Thousands of British, Canadian and Polish troops were killed, and the battle lost ensured tough time for the Nazi occupied Netherlands, one of the last countries to be liberated. |

Lived here for 6 years so it's nice to see an Oosterbeek page up. To this day, digging in one's garden or cycling in the surrounding woods often leads to finding remnants of war... a grenade or bullet. |
