The travel books don't seem to like Katowice much - but I do ...

It may not have a historic Rynek like many Polish cities, but it's a friendly city with lots of good restaurants, cafes & bars.

As at June 2011 the old train station has been demolished and work is underway on a new one combined with a shopping mall and offices complex - I look forward to seeing that completed as the old station didn't give a good first impression of the city.

Katowice is a very old coal mining town. Heavy steel industry there. When Solidarity took over the pollution was so bad that the govt gave gasmasks to all the people living there. Many people have emmigrated. Heavy German influence.

Hi Ben, It may not be popular but it seemed that many of of the road signs out of Krakow used Katowice for their reference point. It's all interesting...Tom

I've passed by Katowice a couple of times, this time I'm going to see it - will be there for New Year! =)
