Less than an hour by local bus from Vilnius, Trakai is a very nice place to visit for a day.

Trakai is the former capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania -- the castle was built around 1400 -- it was destroyed in the 17th century during the war with Russia and rebuilt in the second half of the 20th century.

There is a museum in the castle which is open every day during the summer season, but during winter it's closed on Mondays.

You can rent rowing or pedal boats for a leisurely sail around the lakes.

Lots of tourists visit Trakai, so there are plenty of places to eat and drink.
