The Peak District National Park is a great place to visit if you like walking, hiking, climbing, cycling - it covers an area of 555 square miles (1,440 square kilometres) and attracts over 22 million visitors a year, making it the most visited national park in the western world.
Lying to the south of the Pennines, The Peak District is surrounded by the cities of Manchester to the north-west, Sheffield to the north-east, Stoke-on-Trent to the south-west and Derby to the south-east. It's divided into the Dark Peak, generally to the north, upland areas of grassland and moorland on a gritstone base, and the White Peak to the south, a limestone plateau.
The best way to explore it is on foot with a good map (see Packing List) but it's a vast area, so I'll add more photos and information as and when I can.
There's so much to see in the Peak District, it's hard to categorise into 'Things to do' and 'General Tips', so I've put the main villages under 'Things to do' and the main walking/hiking areas under 'General Tips'. |
