August 2005 After being 2 hours on the BC Ferrie I arrived in Nanaimo/Duke Point. I drove on to Parksville. After checked into a hotel, I walked around a bit in the city.
August 2005 After breakfast I checked out of the hotel. I started to drive up north. I decided that I took the Oceanside Route (which is on the north east coast of Vancouver Island). On the way I went to Milner Gardens and Woodland in Qualicum Beach. This is a place in the middle of a forest and it is really full with great flowers. I really loved this place. You also had a great view over the sea (between Vancouver Island and the mainland of Canada). In the afternoon I went on with the ride. I took the 19A highway to Courntenay. During the ride I went out of the car a few times to make pictures. When I finally arrived in Courtenay, I went to a hotel.
August 2005 When I checked out of the hotel, I started to ride again. I went to Miracle Beach Park (this is just near Black Creek). I stayed at this beach for about an hour. This day was really clowdy, so I didn't had good views to the mainland of Canada. After the beach I went to Campbell River (which is the last town of the Oceanside Route). When I settled in the hotel room, I went for a walk along the shops. I also saw a cruise ship passing by.
August 2005 I checked out of the hotel. I decided to go back the same route. I was pretty fast in Courtenay. The rest of the day I didn't do much special.
August 2005 After checking out of the hotel, I went on riding south. I went to Miracle Beach Park again. This day it was really great weather: sunny! Which was really great. I took some better photos this day. Back to the car, I went on driving. I stayed in Parksville again. I went to the beach to see the sandsculptures. They were amazing. One was better than the other. But I really enjoyed watching them.
August 2005 In the morning I was driving to the BC Ferrie in Duke Point/Nanaimo. I bought a ticket for the ferry at 9.45am. To my surprise I could go on the ferry at 10.15am. I thought I had to wait till the next round. At 12.15pm I arrived in Tsawwassen/Vancouver. I went straight to the Airport to give the car back to the rental company. Everything was ok when I turned the car in. I drove 430 kilometers in total. I walked to the shuttle bus who drove me to the hotel. I checked in and the rest of the afternoon I didn't do much special. Relax a bit.
August 2005 After breakfast I called my parents. And my grandmother because it was her birthday today. When I finished calling, I went to some shops. I had lunch in the hotel. In the afternoon I went to see more shops. And spend some more money... :) The rest of the afternoon I relaxed for the flight back home.
August 2005 After breakfast I checked out of the hotel. I took the shuttle bus to the Airport. I checked in and walked around a bit at the Airport. The plane should have departed at 12.55pm, but it departed 45 minutes later (the airconditioning was broke and one chair didn't function properly). The flight was 9 hours. I was landing in London Heathrow first. I didn't had much time to go to my next plane, but I managed to do so. So another 45 minutes in the air to Amsterdam. When I arrived at Schiphol Airpot, it appeared that my suitcase was still in London. That never happened to me before. But I got my suitcase the next day. Which was a big releave to me. |

To rent a car and drive it around on Vancouver Island was a culminate in my life. This was the first time ever that I was driving a car by myself on a holiday... Amazing experience. The funny part was: on the way from Parksville to Campbell River I didn't noticed much of the surroundings in my mind. But when I was doing the same route the other way, I discovered that there were corn fields. Pretty weird, hey?

KiKitC Fri Sep 11, 2009 11:22 UTC Interesting sandsculptures. Isn't wonderful when you can explore on your own in a new place? And it's true, you notice things the second or third time around that you completely missed before. Makes travelling even in the same places more fun. |
