BRIGHTON

by a5floor - last update: Jan 22, 2004

City view from the Brighton Pier (or Palace Pier).
On 29 July 2003 I stood up at 5.15am. After being dressed up and having breakfast, my parents took me to the trainstation. I took the train at 6.28am to Schiphol Airport. At 7.45am I arrived at the Airport. I went straight to the check in desk. After half an hour I was checked in. I went straight to the gate. But I had to wait some time. So, I took a cup of tea. At 9.45am it was boarding time and an half hour later we were in the air. About an hour later and an hour in time back, I arrived at London Gatwick at 10.15am. I took the Gatwick Express (train) to Victoria Station in London. When I arrived at the station, I took the tube to Piccadilly Circus. I had an appointment with the employment agency that sended me to an interview. We talked a bit about the position. And after an half an hour, I left the building. I went back to Victoria Station with the tube. Arrived at the station, I bought a trainticket to Brighton. After being in the train for about 45 minutes, I arrived in Brighton at 4pm. At the station in Brighton, I took a cab to the hotel. After checked in the hotel and being in the room, I decided to walk a bit around. And having dinner. When I was in the restaurant, it started to rain. So I decided to go back to the hotel to relax.
On 30 July 2003 the reception woke me up by phone at 7.00am. Around 7.30am I had breakfast. At 8.30am I took a cab to the company I had the jobinterview. The day was called an "assessement day". At 9.00am the day started with a presentation about the company. It ended at 10.00am. From 10.00am you had your own schedule (there were 2 or 3 other vacancies at this day). I started at 10.00am with a jobinterview. It went pretty well. This interview ended at 11.00am. From 11.00am till 12.00noon I had a roleplay. It was ok, but not my kind of thing. And finally, I had from 12.00noon till 1.00pm a team roleplay. This was actually bad. After this part, a view people had to do 3 more test of multiplechoice questions. I was one of them. First we had lunch (which was nice). The 3 tests took 1,5 hours. At 2.30pm I was ready to go. FINALLY!!! It was a pretty exhousted day. But a good experience. After the assessment day, I went straight to the trainstation. I took the train at 3.04pm that took me straight to London Gatwick Airport. I checked in right away. I had several hours for myself. At 8.00pm the plane was leaving (half an hour later due to bad weather in Amsterdam). I arrived at Schiphol Airport 10.00pm local time. I took the train from 10.23pm. I had to swith from trains in Amersfoort. Finally I was in Apeldoorn at 11.30pm. I called my parents to be picked up and I was home at 11.45pm.
31 July 2003 was my last day at my job here in the Netherlands. It was a weird and strange day. Tried to do whatever I could. I got flowers from the collegues I directly worked with (which I never expected that they would). At 4.45 pm it was all over. Since this time I am unemployed. Now I can focus on my new project: my move to the UK. :))
On 01 August 2003 I booked my flight to London Gatwick. I am leaving from Schiphol Airport on Monday 11 August next.
From 04 August 2003 I started to sort things out and clean up my room. Because of my move to the UK, I had to say to myself: what is going with me and what will I through away? So, it became a big project for me.
It is 10 August now. My final day up here in the Netherlands. Yeah!! I wish it was allready tomorrow (when I am leaving!!). :))
The Royal Pavilion.
On 11 August 2003 I woke up at 7am. After being dressed and had breakfast, my dad took me to the airport. Up there we had a drink and a bit to eat. After walking at the Panorama Terrace, I went through custums. I went to the gate. I was boarding at 11.55pm & the plane left at 12.35pm. I arrived at London Gatwick at 12.30pm. After getting my bags, I went to the trains. I had to wait for some minutes at the platform. Finally I went into the train. It took about 40 minutes. After arriving at the trainstation in Brighton, I took the cab to the hotel. I am staying in the Oriental. I put my bags into the room and went for a little walk. At 4.30pm I went for dinner (at Nannos). After dinner, I went back to the hotel to relax. At 7.15pm I went out for a walk along the promenade. Which is nice. At 8.45pm I was back in the hotel.
On 12 August 2003 I bought a mobile phone. To be in tough with the employment agencies (and for my parents, you know how they are).
On 13 August 2003 the big thing started. The beginning of my new life up here. I went for a National Insurance Number, but I had to get a job first. In the afternoon I went to the employment agencies. Nothing else is going on the job market. :( On 15 August 2003 I was contacted by one of the employment agencies. She told me there is a position available in Middlesex. Hopefully I will get more details about this position soon. :))
On 21 August 2003 I did my job search again. No luck so far in finding a job. :(
It's 01 September 2003. I had an appointment with an employment agency. But this person I had it with, denied that she talked to me and had arranged this meeting. She was more interested in her lunchtime than that she would help me. So, that was a minour thing. I went to another employment agency, but they didn't had anything. After this I went to the hotel I am staying in. They were advertising that there are vancancies. I filled in a form and left my cv. They will call me if they have anything.
On 02 September 2003 I went to another employment agency. They were excited that I speak Dutch. I had to fill a form in to register and I will hear from them soon. I also went to find a room by a real estate. But because I don't have a job, I cannot rent one by them. It is getting frustrated that I cannot do a thing. I need a job, but the employment agencies don't have a job for me yet.
It is 03 September 2003 now. I haven't heard from any employment agency so far. I am gonna look on the internet for suitable jobs. :)
I also went to the Jobcentre. There was one interesting position. I wrote a letter (with my cv) to this company in the evening.
On 04 September 2003 I posted my letter to the company I wrote to yesterday. Let's hope I will hear from them. :) I also looked on the internet for suitable jobs.
On 07 September 2003 I went to London for a day out. :))
On 08 September 2003 I walked around in the shopping area here in Brighton. I tried to get a PO Box number, but I cannot have one because I am staying in a hotel. :(
09 Septemeber 2003: the search for a job continues. It was also time to go the hairdresser. Which was nice when my hair was cut. :)
10 September 2003: In the afternoon I got a call from a company. I applied for a position. And I will go to this company for an interview!! YEAH! It will be on 17 September next at 3pm. :))
13 September 2003:
Since this day I am back in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. I made my decision on 12-09-2003. I have been in Brighton for nearly 5 weeks. In these weeks I tried to get a job and to live up here. The main thing I had to do, was finding a job. But it was really diffecult to get one. I went to a lot of employment agencies. When I came there, I had to leave my cv there. And even if I told them that I would like to do anything at first, they were telling me that I would go for being an Accounts Payable. And that they are only looking that for me. After being so long in a hotel, it got to me that I cannot live like this. It costs more than that I am earning money. It is ok for some time, but not for this long.

To work & live in Brighton/UK.

I will try to put some information here about working & living in Brighton/UK.

I was in Brighton from 11 August 2003 till 13 September 2003. I tried to find a job as an Accounts Payable (I am a licensed Accountant). There weren't much jobs for me.
