17 September 2006 At 2.30pm my parents and I went to Schiphol Airport by car. We were at the Airport around 3.30pm. First we went to the check in desk. Tried to do it the electronical way, but it didn't work. So, to the desk. It took some time to process all the data. My suitcase was actually 2.7 kilogram too heavy, but they didn't say anything about it. Lucky me. :) After I was checked in, my parents and I went to a restaurant. We ate and drink something. When we were ready we went to passport control. I said goodbye to my parents and went through passport control. I went to the bank to get Australian dollars. When I had my dollars, I walked around a bit. Had some time left before boarding. At a certain time I was at the gate. I saw at the tv screen that the flight had some delay (the flight from London departed later from there and at Schiphol the plane had to come from the track that is furthest away from arrival hall). Finally I went into the plane. But it appeared that there were 2 suitcases in the loading area of the plane that shouldn't be at this flight. So, we had to wait about 15 minutes before they found the 2 suitcases. A delay of 1,5 hours in total. When I arrived in London the next flight had a delay of half an hour. Walked around at Heathrow for a bit. After a half an hour I left for the next part of my flight: from London (UK) to Singapore. The flight took about 12 hours and 15 minutes. When we were in Singapore, you could go out or stay at in the plane. I decided to go out of the plane. Which was a good thing. Walking around after such a long flight. I had about an hour in Singapore. Being in the plane again, the flight from Singapore to Sydney took 6,5 hours. Above Sydney the plane was going to land. But there was a dead bird on the track, so the plane had to go up again and making another round in the air. At Sydney Airport I had to go through customs, get my suitcase, go to the domestic transfering and check in again. A bus took me to the next plane. I waited at the gate for a while. At 6.50am I was going into the plane. The plane departed about 20 minutes later as scheduled.
19 September 2006 I arrived at Adelaide Airport at 9.10 am. After I walked out of the plane, I went to the information desk of Qantas. I asked for the phone number to reconfirm my flight back out. When I was standing there, my penpal Jane came to me. I got the phone number and Jane & I went to the the area to get my suitcase. It didn't took that long to get my suitcase. We went to the car of my penpal. We went to her house. In the house Jane showed me the room I was staying in. Put my suitcase and bag in the room. Then Jane showed me her house. At 10.30am there was a funeral at the tv of Peter Brock (which was one of the favourite racing drivers of Jane). It should be 1,5 hours on tv, but it turned out to be more than 2 hours. I didn't see all of it as I went to have a shower in the meantime. Around 1.45pm Jane and I went to the Haigh's Chocolate Factory. First we got a tour. It showed a little part of the factory. Which was interesting to see. We also got a story about the factory. After that you could buy the chocolate in the little shop. There was also some chocolate against a cheaper rate (the shape of the chocolate wasn't right for the big sale). After Haigh's Jane & I went to the Glenelg area. It didn't take us much time to find a parking spot. First I bought 2 stamps for cards which I was going to send to my parents and my grandparents. Then we went to the shopping area at Glenelg. We bought some stuff (Jane bought some items of the Holden car brand and I bought some stickers). Finally we went to the beach of Glenelg. I took some pictures over there. |

| | After the beach we went back to the house of Jane. We sat down at the kitchen table and talked a bit. In the meantime Jane called a restaurant (named Ned Kelly) to make a reservation. The reservation was made for 7pm. As it was 6.40pm we had to get ready. In the end we arrived at the restaurant at 7.15pm. This dinner was a welcome dinner for me. We had a great dinner. Around 9.30pm we went back to the house of Jane. Up there we had a little chat before I went to bed at 10pm.
20 September 2006 This morning I stood up at 9am. I slept really good. When I was dressed, I went to the kitchen to have breakfast. Jane's parents were there. After breakfast Jane's father showed me around in the Barossa Valley. We also went to the 'talking dam'. It was such an interesting area to drive through. You see a lot of vineyards and places were you can taste wine.
21 September 2006 On this day Jane's father took me to the Horse Tram and the surrounding of Victor Harbour.
22 September 2006 Jane's father took me first to the Botanical Gardens. After that we saw quite a lot of old buildings of Adelaide. It took us the rest of the afternoon to see all the buildings.
23 September 2006 It was Saturday, so my penpal Jane showed me around. Jane and I went to the Dolphin Cruise first. The Cruise was about 1,5 hours. During the Cruise we didn't see much dolphins: Jane saw 2 and I saw 1. Which was a bummer. Anyway, at least we saw something. Then we went to the Dutch Shop. They sold the same stuff in the Netherlands as well. But way too expensive. Obviously as everything has to be imported. In the afternoon we went to Marion Shopping Centre. We bought a lot of stuff. Too much actually. Well, you only live once!! :) Around 6pm we were back home at Jane's place. I met Belinda (Jane's best friend in Adelaide). The 3 of us had dinner together. We had our meals at different times (first I had my meal, about 10 minutes later Belinda had her meal and 15 minutes after Belinda Jane got her meal). Pretty weird, but good food. After dinner we went back to Jane's place. Up there we did a little game. Which was fun.
24 September 2006 Jane and I went to Tasmania. Read more about the journal on the Tasmania page. |
01 October 2006 Jane, her parents & I went for a drive. We went to Mannum. There is a peddle boat, but it wasn't running this day. We only had lunch up here. We drove around more. We went to the farm of Jane's family in Cambrai. It had great views over there.
02 October 2006 This was a national day. So Jane had off from work. We spend the day together. First we went to Hahndorf. I had a big idea of this place, but it turned out to be a dissapointment. It is a German settlement. There was not much German to see. After this we went to Cleland Wildlife Park. We wanted to see the Tasmanian Devil up here. Unfortunately they were not there. We went to see the kangeroos, koalas and dingos. It was great to hang around up here. I even had a picture taken with a koala. The whole afternoon we spend at Cleland. Late in the afternoon we went to Mount Lofty to get a view over Adelaide. The sun was shining from behind at the city. So you didn't get a clear view. The evening we spend at Jane's house.
03 October 2006 This morning me and Jane's father started at Mount Lofty (as I didn't make any pictures yesterday). It was a great view over Adelaide. :) We went on to the Giant Rocking Horse. This is a big horse made out of wood. At this place you can buy toys made out of wood, see some animals and picnic. We walked around a bit and saw the wooden toys. After this we went on to the National Motor Museum in Birdwood. Up here you will find old and new cars & bikes. I was really interested in this. It gave a good view about the cars & bikes that were driving around in Australia from around 1830 till today. We spend most of the afternoon up here. Next stop was a souvenirshop. This one was a wholesale trader and you could buy the souvenirs for a cheaper price. I only bought one or 2 things up here. Around 5.30pm Jane's father and I were at K-Mart. We had a hot chocolate at a coffee shop. When we finished it, Jane's father left and I waited about 2 minutes before Jane came. She wanted to have copies of my pictures. She tought she would have about 30 or 40 copies. But turned out to get about 135. Around 7pm we were back home.
04 October 2006 Today it was driving around mainly. First we went to see the house of Lleytong Hewitt (the tennis player). Allthough he paid $3.2 million for it, it was an ugly house. Afterwards we went driving around the Westlakes area. This is one of the rich area (rich people living here). In the afternoon we went to see the Railway Museum. Which was interesting. You see all the trains from about 1825 till today.
05 October 2006 In the morning Jane's father and I went for a ride again. First I posted a box at the post office. Then we went the petrol station to get some petrol. We went on to the expensive school their oldest son went to for a year. You can see from the building that it was an expensive school. We drove around in the area named Springfield. There were a couple of nice houses. Next stop was Windy Point. Up here you have another good view over the city of Adelaide. There is also a restaurant. We tried to made a reservationg up there, but it was closed. After this we went back to the house of Jane. In the afteroon I didn't do much special. Tried to relax a bit for the big day tomorrow. Jane's father made a reservation at Windy Point by phone for the evening. Which was a nice dinner. It was a thank you dinner to Jane and her parents for letting me stay at their place and showing me around in Adelaide.
06 October 2006 Today I went back home to the Netherlands. Missed my flight in London, UK, due to late arrivals of the planes on the way and strict checking at London Heathrow. Because I missed my flight, I didn't had my suitcase at Schiphol Airport. Which was brought at my home the next day. | | | Dingo at Cleland Wildlife Park. |
