If Amsterdam is too crowdy for you, why not visit Alkmaar. There is a Red Light District, a main square (the famous Cheese market), lots of little alleys to explore and some wonderful shops.

My best friend lives in Alkmaar and I just love this city! I haven't been to the Turkish restaurant yet, but I have to remember that when I visit Alkmaar again! :-)) Thanks for the tip!
I Went there last year and I loved Alkmaar!!! But I guess I missed Alkmaar's Red Light District!!! :-(((((
We just returned from Alkmaar and I can only confirm what you said - it is much less crowded than Amsterdam and still has lots to see!!!
I have heard much about this town of Alkmaar, where they hold big cheese markets in summertime.
