Amsterdam has big canals like Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht. Besides these waters there are a lot of smaller ones to explore. My personal favorites: -Bloemgracht and Egelantiersgracht -Groenburgwal -Brouwersgracht If you visit Amsterdam for the first time, a walking option is a guided tour.

It's the place real Amsterdammers live. A good startpoint is a place the locals named The Johnny Jordaanplein (at the South of the middle of the Nine little streets). There you find the statues of the local singers Johnny Jordaan and Tante Leen and musians Johnny Meijer and Manke Nelis. In the nearby café you can sing along with the local Dutch songs. At the Westerkerk church (Singel canal side) a plaque of the famous singer Willy Alberti can be found.

At the Munttoren (the former Regulierspoort) foundations, pieces of the old city wall can be seen. Next to the Munttower you can find the famous Flowermarket along the Singel.

The Westerkerk was officially opened on Whitsunday 1631. It is built for Protestant services and is the the biggest Protestant church in the Netherlands. The tower bears the "golden" symbol of the imperial crown of Maximilian of Austria (Keizerskroon), which was his gift to the city in gratitude for support given tot the Austro-Burgundian princes. Rembrandt, one of the world’s most famous painters, was buried in the church. Visiting hours: Monday till Friday 11AM - 3PM (April - September). Church services (in Dutch) Sundays 10.30AM.

Marg | ardnas67 Thu May 7, 2009 17:35 UTC today we visited the Anne Frank house. After seeiing the movie about her on 4 may it was impressive to see the house where 8 people stayed for 2 years. On our way to the station we passed unintentional the red-light district. Well, that's Amsterdam also | CALSF Wed Apr 1, 2009 04:52 UTC Yes! I sure enjoyed Amsterdam and your tips are the best.
