There are just too many restaurants in Amsterdam. In the center you will find the well-known fast food chains represented amongst a lot of others. If you are looking for more world-food places go to the Albert Cuyp area. Some links:

    Diningcity
    Dinnersite
    Special restaurants

    DAM area
    Leidseplein area
    Rembrandtplein area
    Nieuwmarkt area

    De Pijp quarter

Don't miss the raw hering stalls!

Your visit to Amsterdam cannot be complete without trying a "Hollandse Nieuwe" a.k.a. "Zoute Haring" (Salty herring).

My favorite stand is at the Waag on the Nieuwmarkt square (but the owner told me he will stop in 2009, ahhhr!).

My # 2 choice is in front of the Westerkerk (near the Anne Frank house). They also sell a fabulous crab salade.

Favorite Dish: "Broodje Haring" (White bun with raw herring), with some onions.

Small cozy place at just 100 meters from the Royal Palace (Dam square).

This restaurant is one of the few serving real Dutch food.

Try the Mixed Dutch special if you want to try the Capucijners (beans).

VOC Café: Great location dating from the Middle Ages
  • Tip Rating:
  • Restaurant Name: VOC-café

The VOC-cafe is housed in the Schreierstoren, located opposite the Central Station (SE-side). The toren itself was constructed in 1487.

It's a basr in an historic setting with some backrooms for a more private get together.

This was the ideal starting point for our Feb 22 2003 VT-meeting (and a later one as well).

Favorite Dish: Just had a nice lemon tea here.

Eetkamer van de Jordaan: At the Jordaan
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Eetkamer van de Jordaan

Great local place with good food. Rather small, so reserve in advance.

I can assure this place only has toppers on the menu (including vegetarian).
It's hard to make a choice as all the items are appealing.

For Euro 30 to 35 you will enjoy a great 3 course meal, drinks included.

In the background Andre Hazes can be heard, the music level is low.

    Open from 5.30 PM.

Favorite Dish: Rode Poon (a fish dish).
    The vegetables are very fresh.

    Smits Koffiehuis: NZH recollections
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Smits Koffiehuis

Smits Koffiehuis opened in 1919 as a place were many vistors from the Province of Noord Holland got together at the start of their journey with the NZH steam tram to the North.

Through the years the Koffiehuis stayed popular due to its location opposite the Central Station. The wooding building survived two wars and the growth of the Amsterdam public transport, including the underground metro.

Due to its location, a front room is used by the local tourist service (VVV) for last minute hotel bookings.

The main room is downstairs with a nice terras along the water.

Favorite Dish: Apple pie with nuts.

I have only been there was many years ago but hope to put Amsterdam on our agenda soon. Do you have public transport all yellow? Think I got lost there. Marg

today we visited the Anne Frank house. After seeiing the movie about her on 4 may it was impressive to see the house where 8 people stayed for 2 years. On our way to the station we passed unintentional the red-light district. Well, that's Amsterdam also
