Borne was known as the village of Burgunde; that name can be traced back in official papers to 1206. Recent archeologic findings reveled farming activities as far back as the start of our calendar. The village was controlled by the Bishop of utrecht. The village never was fortified and had no protective walls at all. Due to this open character Borne has no trail of distruction like some other towns in Twente knew. The name of the village change a number of times; in 1262 it was known as Borgende, in 1397 as Boerne and later in 1497 as Borgen.Borne stayed a small farmer's village for centuries, until in 1828 Salomon Jacob Spanjaard started a textile factory. In 1895 Borne was the first village to build its own power plant and electric street lights.

Nowadays Borne's population grew to 21.000 people and new suburbs are under construction.
