Sailing Giethoorn Mainstreet

Giethoorn was founded around 1230 by mediterranean refugees. These first inhabitans found a lot of goat horns, probably washed ashore during the 1170 St. Elisabethsflood.
The present lakes and canals were digged to get peat ("turf").
Most houses were build on the remaining island and connected via a network of small bridges.
