Water gateway to Amsterdam
IJmuiden

IJmuiden was started in 1876 after the construction of the Noordzee kanaal (Northsea canel) was completed.
The town is situated at the South side of the canal, while the counsil town of Velsen (well known for the "Hoogovens" or Iron works) is situated at the North side. The two towns are connected by the canal locks and the Velder tunnel.
At the entrance of the canal the Fort eiland is in the middle. This Fortress Island is part of the UNESCO heritage "Stelling van Amsterdam".
