"A paradise in between three cities" Lonnekermeer by pieter_jan_v

Lonnekermeer Travel Guide: 4 reviews and 10 photos

Some history

The Lonnekermeer was created around 1900. In that period the neighbouring city of Hengelo became more industrialised and the railroad tracks running through the middle of the town caused major delays in the town's traffic. The sand necessary for lifting up the railroad track came from the area were the Lonnekermeer now is.

Present

The Lonnekermeer has been an area close to the public for long times. Since 2000 the area is open to the public (walkers only!).
