History of Zutphen

Zutphen is a Hanse town and one of the oldest Dutch towns. The history of this town goes back to the Roman times, when the location at the river was a small settlement. Around 800 Zutphen was the center of local government. In the 9th century the town was destroyed by the Vikings. In a reaction a new town with fortifications was build. Zutphen developed as a trading place and became one of the Hanse towns. Two years marked the early history: 1284 the year of the city fire and 1394 the year of the plague disease. During the 80-year war with Spain Zutphen was conquered and re-conconquered several times.
