The city of Lier probably dates back as far as 1196. Like now the market is the town's main center.
The Belfort and a Lakenhalle were the most important buildings build. A lot of the monumental buildings were destroyed in both World Wars.
Luckely the Belfort and the City Hall survived and the the Mayor of Lier encouraged his citymen to rebuild their old homes as much as possible.
The Belfort building had three functions:
- A safe for the "Keure" (city papers with freedom rights)
- Bell tower for fire alarm
- Meeting hall and prison
In 1418 the Lakenhalle was transformed into the City Hall; the Lakenhalle moved to the present Vleeshuis. In 1740 the City Hall was reconstructed.
At the Market each Sunday the famous pigeon market is held.

LOL, these sort of signs are placed at the driveways of churches. Only if you go there in a funeral car you are allowed to park in front of the church.
