My first visit to London must have been in 1977. It was just for a daytrip, when we stayed with friends at the East coast. One thing was clear, we needed far more time next time.
So, the next year year we reversed things: 5 days London and a daytrip to our friends. Another thing became clear. You never have enough money with you.
We came back in 1982 to celebrate Christmas at London at + 12 degrees C.
It lasted till 1990 for a new visit. I came in on a war ship and the rest of the family by ferry and train. It was a busy weekend.
After joining VT I was invited several times and I was busy with travel arrangements when a sudden lumbago cancelled a trip. I would have been a meeting with Bernie; I never met her.
Our 2009 visit was a spontanous one. We were looking for a cheap Lisbon city trip for the Euromeet2009, but ended up with a flight to London.
2010 was a must due to our participation in the VT treasure hunt. Well, we had a great 6 days stay and travelled by Eurostar train for the first time.
At London you see a battle between tradition and modernisation.
I love some institutions, like the free museums.
I see the tube is improving, but still not at a rate that is wanted.
It's a choice between charm and common sense.
- Pros:Free entry to museums and libraries
- Cons:Smog and the less dirty tube
- In a nutshell:Time to re-visit

I see you stayed at the Royal National Hotel. My daughter will be using that hotel today and until Thursday. She'll be a year near Bournemouth as an exchange student :-)
Yes, especially since we both seem to love London so. Are, or were, you in the Navy at one time?
PJ, just been doing a bit of tip grouping on your excellent London page, it really is well done. the Crown and Dolphin is now flats (apartments) and I think the developers thought it would look "cool" to keep the appearance. fergy.
~ Thanks for your virtual tour of London, Pieter! I wish I could pay a visit too........
Ah yes the Thistle Euston. Stayed there a few times when i've got a good price, good location
Great photos and travelogues! It was nice to meet you both! Thanks for the answers...I'm going to file them. ;) Doug & Dianne Canada
Gosh that's a very comprehensive set of Treasure Hunt photos! And I just spotted myself on the JTR walk! Nice to meet you, if only briefly!!
Hey!! What's Barney doing there?... He must have snuck away from Perth for the weekend lol. xx
good t/l although I'd prefer you didn't put the answers to the questions up cause we want to be able to use the hunt again for visitors - what do you think?
Great travelogue about the Treasury hunt... too bad that I could not join you... I would be able to get extra points with some extra Swiss chocolates ;-) For sure I need to go back to taste all your pub tips.
